I've heard from practice management gurus over many years that the best way to motivate employees to produce more, sell more, collect more, and recruit more new patients is to institute a bonus system. Many CAs and secretaries earn a great deal above their base pay by pushing a few more products, digging a little harder for collections, and being a little more aggressive in "recapturing" delinquent patients. I'd always accepted this practice as a reasonable approach to increasing practice statistics. Bob Levoy doesn't think much of these incentive plans. See why.
Thanks for the article highlight Doc. What are your personal thoughts regarding employee incentive plans? I would also add confusing behavior by the staff to the list. I don't think any doctor wants their staff to be perceived as pushy salesmen. No doubt it will do more harm than good if staff members don't tread carefully.
